Wendell E. Shaner Sr., age 85, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away Tuesday September 15, 2026 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born December 16, 1940 in Monmouth Illinois, the son of Charles J. and Agnes Ottoson Shaner. On June 14, 1958, he married Marian Land in the Stronghurst Bethel Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death on October 10, 2004.
Wendell was a lifelong farmer in the Stronghurst area. He had served on the board of the Warren-Henderson County Farm Bureau, and the Stronghurst Grain & Merchandise board. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling in Biggsville and Blandinsville. Throughout his adult life, what Wendell enjoyed most was staying at home, farming the land, and taking care of his family. He was an active member of the Stronghurst Bethel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include three sons, Wendell (Lisa) Shaner Jr of Yorkville, IL, Scott (Susan) Shaner of Carman, IL, Roger (Tina) Shaner of Stronghurst, IL,, four grandchildren, Samantha Shaner, Molly Shaner, Ryan Shaner, Jacob Shaner, two step-grandchildren, Kayia Halstead and Kiandra Halstead, seven great grandchildren, Brynley Covert, John Shaner, Finley Shaner, Ellie Mae Shaner, Orin Shaner, Fern Shaner, Polly Shaner, and one sister, Sandra Lefler of Carman, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marian, and one granddaughter, Sadie Shaner.
Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2026 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral for Mr. Shaner will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday September 21st in the Bethel Lutheran Church, in Stronghurst, with Quentin Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst Food Pantry.
