Virginia Kay Rich, 86, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away at 12:10 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2021 at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.
Virginia was born on January 25, 1935 near Durham, Illinois, the daughter of Charles C. and Ora W. (Lowe) Rodeffer. On January 24, 1954 she married Clifford Eugene Rich in Disco, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 25, 2008.
Virginia was a 1952 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school she graduated from Gem City Business School, Quincy, Illinois. Earlier in life she worked for the Lomax Canning Factory. She later worked as head cook for the LaHarpe School and the Country Café. Her longest position was working as a dispatcher for the Hancock County Sheriffs Office, retiring in 1999.
Before moving to town, Clifford and Virginia worked together on the farm. Together they owned and operated the Bargain Barn, they also sold antiques and collectibles at area flea markets. Her faith and her family were most important to her.
Virginia was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church, Hancock County Republican Women and Modern Mother's Club. She volunteered at the Hancock County Extension Office and with the Grey Lady Volunteers at the former Mary Davier Hospital in LaHarpe.
Survivors include four daughters- Debora (Greg) Wisslead of LaHarpe, Delinda (John) Lucas of Sutter, Illinois, Deanna Stambaugh of LaHarpe, Carol Darnell and fiance Mark Moore of Lima, Illinois and honorary children John and Tammy Hanssen of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Seven grandchildren- Johnny Lucas, Matthew Lucas, Julie Stambaugh, Kelsey (Shaun) Keough, Tanisha Wisslead, Brandon Stambaugh and Austin (Brittany) Goughnour and one great-grandson- Nash Goughnour. Sisters- Wilma Jean Voigts of Dwight, Illinois and Betty Olson of Carthage. Along with one sister-in-law- Jean Rodeffer of Stronghurst, Illinois and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter: Mary Denise Rich and siblings: Evelyn Carter, Kenneth "Swede" Rodeffer, Richard "Jiggs" Rodeffer, and Wayne "Bud" Rodeffer.
Cremation has been entrusted to Banks & Beals Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the LaHarpe Christian Church. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in the LaHarpe Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church or the LaHarpe Ambulance.
