Obituary

Mrs. Virginia Lee Massie, 84, of LaHarpe, IL formerly of Carthage, IL and Colusa, IL passed away at 11:35a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe.

Virginia was born on June 25, 1930, the daughter of John and Fannie Williams VanHyning. On March 19, 1950 she married Fred D. Massie in Colusa, IL. He preceded her in death on August 26, 2011.

Virginia graduated from the Dallas City High School in 1948. She, and her family, raised and bred a commercial flock of Suffolk Sheep. Virginia served as the director of Make It With Wool for Illinois, was a member of the Hancock County Historical Society, Home Extension, as well as the Hancock County Farm Bureau. She also owned and operated the 1850's guest house near Dallas City for many years.

Mrs. Massie is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo (Gary) Doss of Dallas City, Jan Boyd of Washington, IA and Gayle (Bill) Radel of Nauvoo, IL, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two sisters, Donna Kurrle of Kankakee, IL and Eva (John) Horan of Dallas City, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fred, one grandson, Ethan Herriman, one son-in-law, Rich Boyd, two sisters, Paula Lynn VanHyning and Lois Swigert.

Services will be held at 2:00p.m. Friday, August 1, 2014 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Ron Leanard officiating. Burial will be held at Harris Cemetery, Dallas City. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 12:00 until 2:00p.m. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, the Hancock County Historical Society, and the Colusa United Methodist Church.
