Obituary

Verda Mae Gittings, 92, of rural Dallas City, Illinois died at 6:05 a.m. Friday August 29, 2014 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst. She was born January 3, 1922 in Lomax, Illinois, the daughter of George and Pearl Porter Scott. On September 30, 1939, she married Clyde R. Gittings in Lomax. He preceded her in death on September 30, 2008.

Mrs. Gittings assisted her husband in the operation of their family farm. Earlier in life she had worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant, and had driven a school bus for several years. She was a member of the Lomax-Carman Senior Citizens.

Survivors include six daughters, Rosilee (Gerald) Postle of Carman, IL, Lila Gittings and Sandra Hewitt, both of Dallas City, IL, Ellen (Randy) May of Lomax, IL, Nancy (Cary) McDonald of Littleton, CO, Peggy (Randy) Nelson of Mt. Union, IA, three sons, Lyle (Donna) Gittings of Dallas City, Ronnie (Shelly) Gittings, of Stronghurst, IL, Rodney (Drena) Gittings of Rock Island, IL,thirty two grandchildren, eighty seven great grandchildren, and sixteen great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son, one grandson, one great grandson, and two sisters.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday September 3, 2014 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Peggy Stott officiating. Burial will be in the Crane Cemetery, near Lomax. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst and OSF Hospice of Galesburg, IL.
