Thomas H. Koopmans, 93, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2025 at the Macomb Post Acute Care Center, Macomb, Illinois.
He was born December 20, 1931 in Momence, Illinois, the son of Simon and Kathrine Zelendrust Koopmans. On August 7, 1955 he married Eleanor "Elie" Smith in Momence.
Tom was raised in Kankakee County, Illinois and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He lived in Oquawka, Illinois for a time before he and Elie moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he worked for Allied Farm Equipment. Following that he worked for the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He retired and moved to LaHarpe in 1990. Tom loved to grow flowers, was active in the Red Cross Blood drives as both a donor and assisting with the scheduling of donors and could often be seen helping people in the community by driving them to various appointments, shopping and local activities. He was a member of the LaHarpe Union Church.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, David (Deb) Koopmans of Omaha, Nebraska and Robert (Becky) Koopmans of Burlington, Iowa, two daughters, Melanie Eastabrooks of Dayton, Ohio and Valerie Pappas of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, daughter-in-law, Teresa Koopmans of Gladstone, Illinois, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one brother, Melvin Koopmans of Argos, Indiana and three sisters, Kathrine Runia of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Helen DeVries of Florida and Janice Alvey of Huntington, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by one son, Garry Koopmans, two son-in-laws, Kevin Eastabrooks and Billy Pappas, four brothers, one sister and one sister-in-law.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025 at the LaHarpe Union Church with Rev. Rick Goettsche officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the LaHarpe Union Church. To leave a condolence, please visit Tom's obituary at banksandbeals.com
