Mr. Robert Byers, 89, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 5:15PM Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
He was born in Lewis County, MO on October 29, 1923 the son of Zelno and Edna Marquette Byers. On August 29, 1942 he married Mary Jane Henry in Edina, MO, she survives.
He is survived by his wife, 2 children, Edna Faye (Jim) Pence of Dallas City, IL and Wendell Byers of Grandville, MI, 6 grandchildren, Rhonda Young, Todd Luttenegger, Sharon DeBaillie, Karen Lee, Dawn Haynes and Julie Coleman, 12 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Byers was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cecil, who served overseas during WWII, one grandson, twin great-granddaughters and step-mother, Mabel Byers.
He was an active member of the Dallas City Lions Club, he was a charter member of the Dallas City Ducks Unlimited and later joined the Lomax Chapter. He was an avid outdoors man and lived for every summer of gardening. He was well known in the area as Tomato Bob. Bob worked for Ben Bows Coal Co., Standard Gas Station in Dallas City, Brecks Shampoo Co. in Ft. Maridon and 29 years at the Iowa Ordinance Plant.
Services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Kendall Hetrick officiating. Burial will be held at Crane Cemetery near Lomax, IL. Friends may call after 3:00PM Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00PM. In lieu of flowers contributions will be used towards the purchase of a Headstone.
