Phillip Arthur Anders, age 89, of Raritan, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Lamoine Retirement Living Center in Macomb, Illinois. He was born March 14, 1936 in Stronghurst Township, the son of Harold Judson and Hazel Virginia (Smith) Anders. He was married to Shirley Jean Thomas. They later divorced. On December 12, 1969, he married Carlyn Estella Armstrong in the Old Bedford Christian Church. She survives.
Mr. Anders served his country in the United States Army from February of 1959 through February of 1961, and again from October of 1961 through August of 1962. He was honored to attend the Veterans' Honor Flight in October of 2018, accompanied by his daughter-in-law, Nicole.
Phillip had been employed as a farm hand for Hennenfent Farms, owned and operated Phil's 66 service station in Raritan from 1969-1972, and then worked for the Twomey Company for twenty eight years, retiring in 2001. After retirement, he worked for several local townships, mainly Stronghurst township, and served as a Village Trustee for Raritan for several years. He was a member of the Smithshire United Methodist Church,
Survivors include his wife, Carlyn, three sons, Michael David (Kathy Jones) Anders, Anthony Phillip (Niccol Stout) Anders, and Scott Eugene (Nicole) Anders, three grandchildren, Cody Ryan Anders, Jason (Selena) Anders, and Jared Anders, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Phillip D. Anders, one brother, Eugene H. Anders Sr, and one sister and brother-in-law, June and Wayne Lam Sr.
The funeral service for Mr. Anders will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, with Rev. A. Lee Unger officiating. Burial will follow in the Raritan Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until time of services on Tuesday, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst-Raritan Volunteer Ambulance Service. Please visit banksandbeals.com to leave a condolence.
