Michael "Mike" Nelson, 74, of Fountain Green Township, Illinois, passed away at 11:35 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2021 at his home.

Mike was born on May 22, 1947 in Rochelle, Illinois, the son of Bernard and Flossie W. (Gorman) Nelson. On February 11, 1989 he married Melanie Serock in Elgin, Illinois. She survives.

Mike proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked for 23 years as a firefighter for the Elgin Fire Department. He enjoyed volunteering as a shooting instructor for the McDonough County 4-H Shooting Sports Program.

Survivors include his wife, Melanie; one son, Mike (Kim) Nelson of Nixa, Missouri and one grandson, Tyler Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks & Beals Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the Fountain Green United Presbyterian Church. Military Rites will follow at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Fountain Green Fire Department or the Fountain Green United Presbyterian Church.
