Meredith Lee "Mert"Flatt

Meredith Lee Mert Flatt, 77 of rural Media, IL died at 9:29 p.m. Friday November 8, 2013 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born May 11, 1936 in North Henderson, IL, the son of Elmer Clyde and Edythe Southern Flatt. On June 16, 1957, he married Bonnie Jean Stinemates in Kirkwood, IL.

Mert was a 1954 graduate of Kirkwood, Illinois High School and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb for two years. He farmed, was a cattleman, and raised hogs all of his adult life near Media. He had served on the Henderson County Board and the Media Township Board for several years. He was a member of the Stronghurst United Methodist Church and served on the church board and various church committees. He was also a member of the A. Lincoln Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Kirkwood, Illinois. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed rural living and country music.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter- Stephanie (Matthew) Sims of Gerlaw, IL, one son- Bradley (Rhonda) Flatt of Media, three grandchildren- Haley Sims, Chandra (Todd) Woodbury, Travis (Michelle) Vancil, three great grandchildren- Connor and Peyton Woodbury, Grant Vancil, two brothers- John Jack Flatt of Alexis, IL, Curt (Rita) Flatt of Burlington, IA, and one beloved brother in law- Robert (Diana) Stinemates of Monmouth.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Flatt will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday November 12, 2013 at Banks & Beals. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery near Media. Memorials have been established for the Stronghurst United Methodist Church and the Stronghurst Ambulance Service.
