Melvin Eugene "Smiley" Duncan Sr, age 80, of Stronghurst, IL, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Roseville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Roseville, Illinois. He was born May 13, 1941 in LaHarpe, IL, the son of Kenneth and Ruth Ferguson Duncan. Melvin was married to Barbara Land. They divorced. On December 7, 1963, he married Beverly Jean Vaughn. They later divorced.

Besides raising nine children, Melvin farmed for many years, worked at J.I. Case Company, and drove trucks for the Aldi Corporation and Mike Henry Trucking.

Survivors include his mother; Ruth Duncan of Stronghurst, five daughters; Brenda Parker of Burlington, IA, Tina (Kevin) Buck of Danville, IA, Alicia Copenhaver of Hannibal, MO, Rhonda (Brad) Flatt of Media, IL, Lisa (Peter) Klees of West Burlington, IA, three sons; Jeff (Beth) Duncan of Troy, MI, Alan (Monica) Nichols of Dallas City, IL, Randy (Jean) Nichols of Stronghurst, IL, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, one brother; Howard (Judy) Duncan of Stronghurst, IL, and five sisters; Carol Johnson, Cindy Smith, and Christy (Randy) Keever, all of Stronghurst, Connie (Norman) Larue of Macomb, IL, and Candy Duncan of Monmouth, IL. His son Melvin E. "George" Duncan Jr preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Interment of ashes will follow in the Stronghurst Cemetery.
