Mary Frances Pieper

Mary Frances Pieper, age 90 of Dallas City, Illinois died at 3:30 p.m. Friday October 16, 2009 at the Gilpin Home in Dallas City. She was born February 27, 1919, the daughter of Kash and Estella Mae Strong. On February 12, 1942, she married William F. Pieper in Brownsville, Texas. He preceded her in death on January 26, 2003.

Mary graduated from Carthage College and Western Illinois University, where she earned her teaching degree. Early in her profession, Mary taught several different grade levels, but during most of her career, she taught in the kindergarten and first grades. Mary taught in the Dallas City/Lomax School District and retired at the age of 73. In her retirement she continued to substitute teach until the age of 80. Mary was a member of the Dallas City United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four children - Bill (SuzAnn) Pieper of Monmouth, IL., Nancy (Paul) Clampitt of Dallas City, IL., John (Teresa) Pieper of Dallas City, IL., Terri (George) Van Hagen of Burlingtom, IA., six grandsons, one granddaughter, three great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and over 1000 students who she loved so dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers- John and Jack Strong, and her husband.

Marys greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. She adored her grandchildren and loved attending their school, musical, and sporting events until her health prevented her from doing so. She also loved the profession of teaching and the many rewards which came with it.

As per Marys request, there will be no formal visitation. Friends are invited to a Sharing Of Memories Tuesday October 20th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at her former home located at 267 East Third Street in Dallas City. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday October 21st in the Harris Cemetery near Dallas City. Rev. Jim Luder, former student of Marys, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hancock County Hospice and to purchase books for the Dallas City Elementary School Library. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City is assisting with arrangements.
