Verna G. Martindale

Verna G. Martindale, 94, of Dallas City, IL , formerly of Burlington, passed away Tues. Aug. 26, 2014 at 7:40 am. at Oak Lane Nursing Home in Stronghurst, IL. She was born Jan. 18, 1920 in Burlington, IA, the daughter of John H. and Verna M. (Guignon) Behtz. Verna was raised by her Grandmother Bertha Behtz (known as Mom). On May 29, 1941 she married Dan A. Martindale in Seattle, WA. He passed away on Jan. 12, 1997.

She was a gradutate of BHS in 1937. She worked at Midwest Biscuit. After marriage she followed her husband during his military career to Seattle, WA, Washington DC, Boston, MA, and New Port, RI. After Naval discharge they made Burlington home. In 1954, the family moved to Panama City, FL. Aside from being a homemaker, she assisted teaching dance classes, being a youth leader, and Sunday School teacher for her church. Upon retiring in 1974, they moved to Dallas City to be close to family. She was a member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Panama City, FL. She attended First Christian Church in Dallas City. She also was a member of Eastern Star and Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed time with her family, especially playing card games and marbles with grandchildren & great grandchildren. She spent much time crocheting, reading, listening to big band music, and taught herself to play the organ.

Survivors include two children, John "Rocky"(Dee) Martindale of Denver, CO., and Joyce (Jerry) Lillard of Dallas City; 6 grandchildren-Todd (Maura) McCormick, Matt (Tami) Martindale, Jason Martindale, Mark Martindale all of Colorado, Amy (Ed) Ryner of Dallas City, Kim Anderson of Burlington; 17 great grandchildren-Scott, Mandy, Nathan, Chance McCormick; John, Jacob, Justus, Julia Martindale; Cody and Christopher Martindale; Jordan, Payton, Dawson, Jackson Ryner; Austin, Blake, Callie Anderson ; 2 half sisters, Hazel Foster and Donna Shockey. Several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, grandmother, parents, a half brother and a half sister.

The funeral service will be on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Banks and Beals Funeral home in Dallas City with Pastor Will Fowler officiating. Her body has been cremated per her wishes. A private family burial will be held at a later date in the Keokuk National Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Vernas memory for the Dallas City First Christian Church.
