Mr. Larry L. Barney Sly, 72, of Lomax, IL passed away at 12:56 AM Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at The Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, IA. He was born on July 8, 1943 in LaHarpe, IL to James and Fern Eckhardt Sly. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Fern and Leo Jolly Wallace. On July 26, 1969 he married Sheila Gibb in Lomax.

Barney was a 1961 graduate of the Stronghurst, IL High School. He then attended the Peoria Barber School and returned to work for Bill Shaws Barber Shop in Dallas City, before opening his own shop in Lomax. He operated his shop until 1973, at which time he began working for J.I. Case in Burlington until his retirement. He was an Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. Mr. Sly served on the Lomax Fire Department for 47 years and was a trustee for the Dallas Rural Fire District Board. For a few years Barney served on the Lomax City Board and drove the Lomax ambulance. He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion, Fort Madison Moose Lodge, and The Burlington Eagles Club. Barney belonged to the Lomax Christian Church. He enjoyed car shows and Deer Hunting.

Survivors include his wife: Sheila; one daughter: Lisa (J.D.) Henshaw of Wever, IA; one son: Matt (Abby) Sly of Nampa, ID; two grandchildren: Dakota Worley and Jocelyn Sly; three brothers: Dennis Sly of Lomax, Mike (Cindy) Wallace of Londonderry, New Hampshire, Dewaine (Judy) Sly of Texas; three half-siblings: Greg (Linda) Sly Bettendorf, IA, Linda (D.J. Carlson) Sly of Blue Grass, IA. and Rosie (Scott) Sly-Ginther of Davenport, IA.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents, and step-father, Leo Jolly Wallace.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Raymond McLaren officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow in Crane Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 PM on Friday, December 4th. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Fire Department and the Henderson County Hospice.
