John William Shallenberger, 80, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 7:35 p.m. Thursday, October 31, 2019 at his home.

John was born on July 29, 1939 in Gladstone, Illinois the son of Wayne and Gladys Miller Shallenberger. On February 8, 1958 he married Betty Lee Kurtz in LaHarpe. Betty preceded him in death on July 7, 2002.

Mr. Shallenberger worked in construction. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two children, John Lee Shallenberger and Jana Finley both of LaHarpe; six grandchildren, including Michelle Welch, who was raised by her grandparents. Also surviving, six great-grandchildren; one brother; Tom Shallenberger of Snellville, Georgia and one sister, Barb Lung of Monmouth, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and three children in infancy.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2019 at LaHarpe Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. There will be no formal visitation, but friends may call from noon until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for St. Jude Children's Hospital.
