Obituary



Helen Louise Latherow, 100, of Carthage, IL passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage. She was born on January 1, 1916, to Samuel E. and Ethel (Campbell) Corbitt on a farm east of LaHarpe, Illinois. She attended Western Illinois University for two years and then taught school (grades 1-8) at a rural school west of Disco, Illinois, for three years.

On April 2, 1938, Helen was married to Brice Latherow. Helen and Brice lived in Fountain Green, farming near there, until 1966 when they moved to Carthage. Helen moved to Red Maple Assisted Care in Carthage in November in 2015.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband in 2001 and their children: Paul Gail, who died on September 18, 1940, when he was six weeks old; Janet Sue, who was stillborn (at full term) on September 5, 1941; and George Alexander, who died on September 15, 1942, when he was three days old.

As a member of the Presbyterian Church in Fountain Green, Helen taught a youth Sunday school class and led a Sunday evening youth group for many years. During her service at Fountain Green Presbyterian Church, she also served as Youth Leader for Great River Presbytery at one time. In 1966 Brice and Helen transferred their membership to the Presbyterian Church in Carthage, where Helen served as elder and on various committees over the years.

Helen also served the community by delivering meals for the Senior Center for ten years and doing volunteer work as a Gray Lady at Memorial Hospital and the Nursing Home.
Helen is survived by nieces and nephews and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 15, 2016 at the Carthage Presbyterian Church with Rev. Susan Loper officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the LaHarpe Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Carthage Presbyterian Church.
