Mr. Gregory Allan Webster, 62, of Lomax, IL passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 3:17 PM at his home.

He was born October 5, 1950 in Burlington, IA, the son of Kenneth Murray and Mary Jean Scott Webster. On September 27, 1970, he married Claudia Faye Smiddy at the Lomax Christian Church.

She survives along with 3 sons, Kurt (Stephanie) Webster of Elmwood, IL and their children, Adeline and Garrett; Bradley (Genna) Webster of Burlington, IA and their daughter, Olive; and Andrew (Miranda) Webster of Lomax. Also surviving are 2 young men who are just like his sons, Micah (Lanetta) Mowen of Galesburg, IL and their sons, Gregory, Dakota, D.J. and Carlos and Daniel Russell at home, 1 sister, Beverly (Bill) Eddington of Colchester, IL and 1 brother, Glen (Karen) Webster of Lomax. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Greg served in the US Army for 2years, spending 1 year in Heidelberg, Germany. He worked for J.I. Case Co. for 32 years and was a member of the Local 807. He served as a volunteer fireman in Lomax, served on the Lomax Town/Village Board, the Dallas City Civic Association and the Dallas City Dist. 336 School Board for 12 years and president of the board for 2 years. He was also a member of the Lomax Christian Church where he served on the board, several times as president, and as a Deacon and Elder.

Greg was a person who enjoyed life. He always had a positive outlook about people and would give them the benefit of the doubt. He also was tough and would tell it like it is which put some people off but also brought him some very strong and caring friendships through the years.

He loved music of all kinds, from the newest and latest to the oldies, from rock-n- roll to country to the classics. Greg loved to garden. He would grow delicious fruits and vegetables and beautiful flower gardens, changing them from season to season. He combined these two passions by cranking up the stereo while killing a lot of weeds! He not only enjoyed the music, he said it helped the plants grow!

After his retirement from Case, Greg started volunteering at the Dallas City Grade School. He would read with the 1st and 2nd graders. He not only read with them, he became their friend and mentor. He always came away with a cute story and always made the student feel important. In the last couple of years he started helping with the Jr. High after school program. Just like with his own sons, he was tough and tried to be a good example to the students. They knew he cared for them and only wanted the best for them now and in the future.

During the last 5 years while battling cancer, he was able to not only live each day to the fullest but make each day count. He didnt want his life to be about himself or the cancer, he wanted it to be about people and giving to others. And with the help of God he was able to.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, December 7, 2012 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Peggy Stott officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Crane Cemetery near Lomax. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Reading Program at the Dallas City Elementary and Jr. High School or to the Lomax Christian Church.
