Mr. Glen Newton Kern, 87, of Clarksville, Arkansas, formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 4:20 A.M. at the WakeMed of Cary Hospital in Cary, North Carolina.
He was born November 30, 1923 in LaHarpe, the youngest of 11 children born to A.W. and Olive Negley Kern. On August 28, 1943 he married his sweetheart, Jane Stevenson in Stronghurst, Illinois. She preceded him in death on November 4, 2002.
Mr. Kern was a graduate of the Terre Haute High School, Terre Haute, Illinois. He was a farmer and Polled Hereford breeder for most of his life. He served on the Henderson County Board of Directors and the Terre Haute School Board. He was also a Director of the Western Illinois Hereford Association, and the Illinois Polled Hereford Association. Glen served on the Henderson County Fair Board and was a member of the Arkansas Cattlemen Association. He was an Elder of the LaHarpe Christian Church.
Glen spent his life loving his family, friends and farming. He considered himself one of Gods servants.
Surviving are six sons, Gavin Kern of Los Angeles, California, Leon (Nancy) Kern of West Union, South Carolina, Sid (Dadee) Kern of Clarksville, Arkansas, Ted (Kelly) Kern of Rotonda, Florida, Robin (Brenda) Kern of Mt. Airy, North Carolina and Ricky (Linda) Kern of Raleigh, North Carolina, 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Helen Christine Kern, 4 sisters, Anna Traser Berlett, Margaret Rice, Bertha Jacob and Beulah Waddill and 6 brothers, Milton Kern, Royal Kern, Harry Kern, Frank Kern, Lyle Kern and his twin, Gale Kern.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, January 14, 2011 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Pastor David Kern officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the LaHarpe Christian Church, PO Box 552, LaHarpe, IL 61450 or the Clarksville Church of Christ, 2211 West Main St, Clarksville, Arkansas.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the Clarksville Church of Christ, Clarksville, Arkansas.
