Gilbert Thomas Linder

Gilbert Thomas Linder, 84 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 8:48 p.m. Thursday November 14, 2013 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. He was born May 27, 1929 in Yarmouth, Iowa, the son of Thomas Charles and Vivian Barrack Linder. On June 6, 1954, he married Shirley Lou Baker at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

He attended schools in Yarmouth, Mediapolis, and graduated from Morning Sun, Iowa High School in 1948. He was stationed in Germany with the United States Army during the Korean War. He moved to the Stronghurst Community in 1957.

Mr. Linder was a retired grocer. He began his career in 1949 in Morning Sun, IA, and retired from Econo Foods in Monmouth, IL in 2001. He was also an ad salesman for the Hancock-Henderson County Quill newspaper, in Stronghurst, for many years, and was the janitor for the Stronghurst United Methodist Church. He was a past president of the Stronghurst Parent-Teachers Association and had served on the Stronghurst Village Board. He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion Post #765, and the United Methodist Church of Stronghurst, where he served on various church committees. He enjoyed yard work, and mowing lawns.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter- Sherry (Mike) McCarty of Moline, IL, two sons- Larry Linder of Adams, MA, Marvin Linder of Carman, IL, three grandchildren- Katherine (Mike) Noack, Andrew Linder, and Patton Linder, two great granchildren- Julie Noack and Alex Noack, one sister - Marjorie (Leo) Croteau of Champlin, MN, and one brother- Raymond (Judy) Linder of Stanwood, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter- Barbara Kay Linder, one daughter in law- Leslie Linder, and one sister - Aleita DeYarman.

Visitation will be from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral for Mr. Linder will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday November 18, 2013 at the Stronghurst United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Hartman officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Stronghurst Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Stronghurst United Methodist Church or Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst.
