Dorothy Mae Eckhardt, 98, of rural Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.
Dorothy was born on June 27, 1923 near Council Bluffs, Iowa the daughter of Wallace and Eva (Rucker) Lewis. On February 21, 1942 she married Dewain Eckhardt in Canton, Missouri.
Dorothy attended Robert Morris College where she earned her teaching degree. She began her teaching career at Gillead School, a one room school, near LaHarpe. She later taught at the former Durham Illinois School, Fountain Green Illinois School and retired from the LaHarpe School. Dorothy was an active farm wife and enjoyed helping her husband on the farm.
Dorothy enjoyed reading her bible and in earlier years, read to many residents at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center. She also enjoyed painting and baking for family and friends. She was a member of the Durham United Methodist Church and the Disco Embroidery Club.
Survivors include one son: Ronnie (Tootie) Eckhardt of Dallas City; six grandchildren: Susan Edwards, Dan Coleman, Dewain Hulett, Adam Hulett, Emily Eckhardt and Jason Hulett; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother: Bill Sage of Council Bluffs, Iowa and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Eckhardt was preceded in death by her husband: Dewain; one daughter: Laura Lee Hulett; two great-granddaughters; one sister: Naomi "Tillie" Brandt and one sister-in-law: Winifred Sage.
The funeral service for Mrs. Eckhardt will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2021 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Lee Unger Officiating. Burial will follow in Crane Cemetery, near Lomax, Illinois. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
