Obituary

David Raymond Root, 72, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away May 12th, 2025, at South Texas Health Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

David was born July 3rd 1952. He lived life to the fullest and was always ready for fun and adventure with friends and family.  In years past, you could find him bowling at Country Fun, camping with his family at Hend-Co-Hills or Youngs Lake, fishing at Brokaw's Pond, playing cards with friends, enjoying the races out at 34 Raceway and taking his kids and grandkids to Cordova Dragway. He would take trips to any festival happening, the Illinois State Fair and also to Six Flags with his kids, their friends, and sometimes his extended family.  He had a knack for gardening and making chili.  Being true to the Root nature, he was a jokester/prankster, he would say "its not too hot", to convince you to try a bite.  If you fell for it, your mouth, would soon be a blaze and you would have learned, David was not to be trusted in the measure of spice or heat! He was a true collector of the hottest hot sauces around.  He also enjoyed going to the movies, gambling, and never missed a 4th of July fireworks show, especially the ones now done in Cameron.  However, his greatest love was family.   Going out for Sunday morning family breakfast was a treasure.  Rarely missing a game, he loved watching and supporting his kids and later his grandkids in sports and he always looked forward to the camping and fishing season with them.  He had dreams of farming with his grandkids and moving to Texas.

David was a hard worker and dedicated employee at JI Case (36 yrs), Farm king (13 yrs), and would work on a farm every chance he got.
To know David was to know unconditional love, acceptance, and forgiveness.  He had a heart like no other.  Taking in and raising others as his own, being the dad and grandpa he didn't have to be.   He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include: his wife Christine Root, his mother Mary Short, his son Christopher (Becky) Root, his daughter Serena Root, honorary daughter Joie Brokaw (Brian), honorary son Michael (Lusiana) Gillette, several grandchildren and honorary grandchildren, three brothers Danny (the late Deborah) Root, Gary (Janet) Root, and Jerry Root, many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by: his father LaVern Root, sister Sherri (Root) Lant, honorary son Daniel Gillette, and his ex-wife Lola Lant.
