Mr. Dan D. Kern, 78, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Friday, August 5, 2011 at 8:49 P.M. at the OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.

He was born on May 15, 1933 in LaHarpe, the son of Milton and Clarice Bughman Kern.
Dan graduated from LaHarpe High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and later earned his Masters Degree from Northwestern University in Library Science. He also served in the U. S. Army. He taught science and biology at the Carthage, Illinois Grade School for several years. He later moved to Huntley, Illinois where he taught Jr. High Science. He then become their Librarian, was their head grant writer and Supervisor for summer programs. He retired from Huntley schools after 30 years and returned to his farm in LaHarpe. He was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church.

He is survived by 2 nieces, Kyung Salazar of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mariana Amador of Dubuque, Iowa, 1 nephew, James Lee of Gilbert, Arizona and several cousins.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, Willard and Richard Kern.

Graveside services, with military rites, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the LaHarpe Cemetery with Nate McCarter officiating. There will be no formal visitation but family and friends are welcome to stop at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe on Tuesday between 2:00 and 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Ambulance service.
