Bonnie Lue (Gibb) Lair, 89, of Lomax, IL, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, IA.
Bonnie was born April 6, 1929 in Lomax the daughter of Charles Ernest and Edith Shanks Smith. On February 14, 1950 she married Keith Gibb. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1985. On September 16, 1988 she married Clarence "John" Lair. He preceded her in death on May 15, 2012.
Bonnie was a graduate of the Dallas City High School. She attended Western Illinois University and graduated from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. She belonged to the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She first taught in the Melville country school, near Lomax. Later, she taught in the Lomax Grade School and Gladstone and Oquawka grade schools. Bonnie taught for a total of 32 years, retiring in 1988.
She was a member of the Lomax Christian Church where she served as a Diaconate, Elder, Sunday School Teacher and played piano and organ. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Fort Madison, volunteered at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab, Stronghurst, IL and at the Dallas City Grade School
Survivors include one daughter, Sheila Sly of Lomax, two sons, Charles "Dick" (Erin) Gibb of Dallas City, IL and Randy Keith (Becky) Gibb of Lomax, three step-children, Karen (Jim) Clough of Alpha, IL, Greg (Laura) Lair of New Boston, IL and Fred (Julie) Lair of Clinton, IA, ten grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Erma Jean Gilbert of Petersburg, IL.
Mrs. Lair was preceded in death by her husbands, two sisters, Bernice Guy and Marie Eileen Smith, one brother, Paul Smith and one son-in-law, Larry "Barney" Sly.
Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Lomax Christian Church with Rev. Maxine Dennison officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Crane Cemetery, Lomax. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Christian Church or Henderson County Hospice.
