Sydney E. Hosford

Sydney Conwell Vaughn Hosford, 88, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 7:15 AM at the Klein Center in Burlington, Iowa.

She was born July 14, 1923 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Jessie Wilcox Conwell. On August 22, 1948 she married Hubert Vaughn. He died April 28, 1963. On July 8, 1966 she married Nyle “Bud” Hosford at the Golden’s Point Church near Hamilton, Illinois. He died June 9, 2008.

Mrs. Hosford was a 1941 graduate of Dallas City High School and a 1945 graduate of Monmouth College. After college she worked as a secretary at the Pentagon for 5 months. Later she worked at Sheaffer Pen Co. as an executive secretary for 6 years. She then started her teaching career, first teaching music at the Lomax School in 1961. Then by 1963 she was teaching kindergarten at Dallas City Elementary School. She taught for a total of 15 years before retiring in 1976. She loved all her students and the chance to touch their lives and see them progress in learning. After retiring she and her husband traveled every winter for 30 years to Mesa, AZ.

She was a member of the former Dallas City United Methodist Church where she was the organist for 50 years. She also loved playing bridge and bingo.
She is survived by two daughters, Lynn (John) Herrera of Payson, AZ and Leigh Bennett of Del Ray Beach, FL.

She was preceded in death by her husbands.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Peggy Stott officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Illinois. Friends may call after 4:30 PM Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday.
