Donald L. Corry
Donald Lee Corry, 90, formerly of LaHarpe, passed away at 5:00 p.m., December 23, 2011, at Wesley Village in Macomb. He was born December 22, 1921, in Flora, Illinois, the son of Walter Francis and Mary (Jones) Corry. He married Ruth “Tommye” Cox on August 10, 1944, in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Mr. Corry was a graduate of Flora High School, where he was a member of an undefeated football team. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Millikin University in Decatur in 1947, where he played on the only undefeated varsity football team in Millikin’s history. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He received his Master’s Degree from Western Illinois University.
Mr. Corry served in the Pacific Theatre with the United States Navy during World War II, reaching the rank of Lieutenant J.G.
He taught math and other subjects for 41 years, 37 of which were at LaHarpe Community District High School. At various times, while teaching at LaHarpe, he also coached football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling, chess, and JETS teams, and drove a school bus. In 1967 he was named “Hancock County Teacher of the Year.”
He was a member of LaHarpe United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for over twenty years. He was also a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes and chess, traveling, and playing board games. His greatest joy came from his family and from interacting with his students through the years.
He is survived by his wife of Wesley Village in Macomb; two sons - Pat (Barb) Corry of Hattiesburg, MI, and Jim (Barb) Corry of Abingdon, IL; three daughters - Sue (John) Atteberry of Decatur, IL, Donna (Howard) Parker of Alexandria, VA, and Beth (Brad) Brinkerhoff of Sherman, IL; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Devore of Mattoon, IL, and Genell Farmer of Flora, IL. He is preceded in death by his parents and a nephew.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Mr. Robert Tillman officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be held in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 until time of services. Memorial gifts may be made to either LaHarpe United Methodist Church or Wesley Village.
