Robert L. Mapes

Mr. Robert Lee Mapes, 90, of Carthage, Illinois, formerly of Disco, Illinois passed away Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 1:47 A.M. at the Heritage Home in Carthage.

He was born February 24, 1920 in Carthage, the son of Emory and Willa Wiedmyer Mapes. On January 26, 1947 he married Alice I. Moore in LaHarpe. Illinois.

Mr. Mapes graduated from the Colusa, Illinois High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force from October 1941 through November 1945. Bob farmed for 7 years, then purchased the Disco Elevator, which he operated for 24 years. Following that he co-owned and operated the True Value Store , with Dean and Carolyn Moore, the Eight Ball Café, with Everett and Sharon Moore and Bob’s Tire Shop, all in LaHarpe. He also was an insurance agent with Carthage Mutual Insurance.

He served on the Hancock County Board for over 37 years, was on the board of the Western Illinois Police Training Unit from 1983 - 2009 and served on the Hancock County Mental Health Board for many years. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post 301 and the Golden Rule Club, all of LaHarpe and the Durham United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, of the Heritage Home in Carthage, one sister, Phyllis (Charles) Vass of Carthage his aunt, Gladys Heagy of Carthage and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Edith Swartz, Ruth Cravens, Mildred Fleming and Betty Welch and his parents.

Services will be held at 10:3A.M. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where Masonic Rites will be held at 6:00 P.M., Monday, followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M.
