Mary Jo Melvin

Mary Jo Melvin, age 73 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 2:48 p.m. Tuesday June 16, 2009 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born October 9, 1935 in Olympia, Washington, the daughter of Harry and Mabel May Murphy Fain. On October 12, 1953, she married James Allen Melvin in Olympia. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2005.
Mrs. Melvin was a 1953 graduate of Olympia High School, Olympia, WA., and a 1967 graduate of Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois. In 1971, she received her Master’s Degree in Linguistics from Western Illinois University in Macomb. She had taught English at Monmouth High School and Union High School for several years. She had also worked at Admiral (Maytag) in Galesburg for twenty one years. She then taught at the Southern elementary and junior high,and most recently for the West Central Pre-K program in Stronghurst. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst.
Survivors include one daughter - Roann M. (Daniel) Gron of Shorewood, IL., two sons - Lowell A. (Vickie) Melvin of Galesburg, IL., Cory D. (Staci) Melvin of Fort Wayne, IN., seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister - Eva Cole and one brother - Robert Fain, both of Olympia, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister - Thomasine Andre, and one brother - Milo Oxford.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 20, 2009 in the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst with Rev. James Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the Monmouth City Cemetery, Monmouth, IL. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday.
