Richard H. Brandon

Richard Harrison Brandon 84, of Springfield , Illinois formerly of Dallas City, Illinois passed away at 9:15 PM Friday, June 12, 2009 at the home of his daughter, Jane Olson, in Springfield .
Richard was the son of Valesco E. and Geraldine (Siegfried) Brandon. Born in Adrian , Illinois on January 7, 1925. On November 9, 1945 he married Norma Byers in Colusa , Illinois. She survives.
He attended local schools and graduated from Colusa High school in 1942. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January, 1944 and served until honorably discharged in January 1948. He served continuously overseas for 18 months, during which time he took part in the Solomons, New Guinea , Philippine Liberation and Okinawa campaigns. Medals/Honors awarded to Richard for his service were the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with nine stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
Before moving to Springfield 6 years ago, Richard had lived his entire life (except for the military) in Hancock County . He farmed in the early years and later retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown , Iowa in 1989. He was a member of the VFW Post 5117 in Carthage, Illinois and the First Christian Church in Dallas City.
Richard was an active outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and was also an avid gardener. After retirement he and Norma enjoyed spending the winter months in Texas where they made many new friends from around the country.
He is survived by his wife, three children, Marla Welch and Jane (David) Olson of Springfield, Illinois and Jeff (Debbie) Brandon of Spring Hill, Kansas, daughter-in-law, Sandy Brandon of Dallas City, eight grandchildren and one step-granddaughter, seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren and one sister, Wanda (Paul) Ensor of Holliday , MO and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by one son, Michael Brandon, two brothers Max and Charles Brandon and a sister Mary (in infancy).
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Mike Kilgallin officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Thornber Cemetery near Powellton, Illinois. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Monday.
