Michael J. McKinnon

Michael John McKinnon, 65, of Terre Haute, died Monday May 11, 2009 at 11:45 p.m. at his home.

He was born July 24, 1943 in Macomb, Illinois, the eldest child of Carl and Mary Irene (Chapman) McKinnon. He married Diana Painter on February 25, 1962 in Terre Haute. After their marriage, they lived in Burlington, Iowa for two years. They moved to Terre Haute where they made their home for the remainder of their married lives.

Mike attended elementary school at Gilead, a one-room country school. He graduated from La Harpe High School in 1961. He attended the Terre Haute United Methodist Church and the Pontoosuc Community Church. He was a volunteer fireman in Terre Haute for 25 years.
Mike retired in April from CSI Ltd., Burlington, Iowa, where he had worked for 19 years as the warehouse manager. Mike had also worked at Lehigh-Leopold in Burlington for 29 years. He rose through the ranks and was assistant foreman of the company when it closed. Mike also worked briefly at Housewright Lumber in La Harpe. Mike was known for his fine woodworking ability. Mike, Diana, Jack and Mary Keith McKinnon opened Cattails and Cornshucks in Terre Haute in 1984, where they showcased their crafts and talents. Mike’s hobbies included woodworking, gardening, dancing, and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s ball games.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Diana McKinnon, Terre Haute; three daughters: Kimberly (George) McKinnon Thompson, Roeland Park, KS; Deborah (PJ) McKinnon Funk, Independence, MO; Susan (David) Hobby, La Harpe; one brother, Jack McKinnon, Macomb; four sisters, Linda (Roger) Hughes, La Harpe; Carol (Bob) Sargeant, Blandinsville; Loretta (David) Anders, Kirkwood; Wendy (Jim) Olson, Blandinsville; four grandsons: JD and Travis Hobby, La Harpe; Michael and Adam Thompson, Roeland Park, KS; 4 nieces and 4 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, O.V. “Buster” Sights, and sister-in-law Mary Keith McKinnon.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 15 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in La Harpe with Pastors Paul Smith and Tom Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Terre Haute United Methodist Church and the Terre Haute Fire Dept.
