John B. Griffiths
Mr. John B. Griffiths, 86, of Colusa, Illinois, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2008 at 8:20 P.M. at his home.
He was born December 10, 1922 at home in Appanoose Township, Hancock County, IL to Carl and Besse Griffiths. He married Phyllis Jean Hanley Hobart on January 10, 1955 in Dalton City, IL.
John attended Colusa High School, graduating in 1940. He apprenticed himself to an electric welder in Carthage, IL, then set up a machinery repair shop on his parents’ farm during World War II. Later he and his father founded the Colusa Elevator Co. in 1944. His brother, Donald, later joined the company which has since grown into a successful company with six grain elevator plants.
At various times he owned a motorcycle, an airplane, and built himself a cabin cruiser boat. He enjoyed playing golf, vacationing with his family in Colorado, working with wood, shopping for the Food Pantry with his wife and watching the Nauvoo-Colusa Vikings play basketball.
Survivors include his wife Phyllis, one daughter, Mary (Paul) Davis of Morago, CA, four sons, John (Connie) Hobart, Warsaw, Dale (Carol) Griffiths, Nauvoo, Steven (Mary) Griffiths, Ft. Madison, IA and Danny Griffiths and special friend Theresa Woulfe of Colusa. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Augusta Griffiths of Littleton, CO and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and one son, Mark Hobart.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 1, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Bob Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Myers Cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials can be made to the Colusa United Methodist Church, Blessing Hospice of Hancock County and Dallas City Food Pantry.
