Dorothy Anna Martin

Dorothy Anna Martin, age 83 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday April 14, 2009 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born September 2, 1925 in Burlington, the daughter of Simon V. and Bessie G. Henry Simonson. On May 7, 1944, she married Thornton L. Martin in Stronghurst. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1999.

Dorothy was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. She had lived in the Stronghurst area from 1944 until 1967. She then moved to Chillicothe, Illinois where she resided until returning to Stronghurst in 1991. She was a member of the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens, Women’s Auxiliary of the Stronghurst American Legion Post #765, and the Stronghurst United Methodist Church. She loved playing dominos and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters - Lynne Martin of Galesburg, IL., Susan (Frank) Javorsky of Parkville, MO., Rebecca (Bob) Kevoian of Indianapolis, IN., three sons - Michael (Orpha) Martin of Edelstein, IL., Yale (Carol) Martin of Keller, TX., Rex (Margreth) Martin of Wilmette, IL., twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and two brothers - John Simonson of Roseville, IL, and Charles (Rosemary) Simonson of Naperville, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters - Edith Mink and Ruth Mandle.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday April 16, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Stronghurst United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst United Methodist Church. Send a condolence here.
