Milton G. Simpson

 

Milton G. Simpson, age 84 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday April 4, 2009 in the OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born November 6, 1924 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of F.G. and Maxine Lovitt Simpson. On February 13, 1949, he married Dorothy Starr in Scott City, Kansas.

Mr. Simpson was a 1943 graduate of Stronghurst High School. He was a C-47 flight engineer with the 64th Troop Carrier Group, 35th Troop Carrier Squadron of the United States Army Corps during World War II. He served in North Africa, Italy, and Trinidad. After his service, he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Miami, Oklahoma. He had been employed at the Scott City, Kansas airport, McDonald-Douglas Airplane Company in Wichita, Kansas, then returned to this area where he farmed on the family farm, south of Stronghurst. He also worked as a mechanic and substitute rural mail carrier for several years.

He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion, a fifty year member of the Oquawka Lodge #123, AF & AM, and 32nd Degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Blackhawk Motorcycle Chapter, Henderson County Olde Tymers, Southeast Iowa Antique Engine Association, and the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters - Fran (David) Work of Gladstone, Illinois, Jane (James) Miller of Stronghurst, three grandsons - Christopher Miller, Eric and Alex Work, and one great granddaughter - Audrey Work. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no public services or visitation. Private interment with Masonic Rites will be held in the Stronghurst Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oquawka Lodge #143, Shriners Children’s Hospitals, or the Stronghurst Ambulance. Send a condolence here.
