Frances Y. Riley

Frances Y. Riley, age 91 of Dallas City, Illinois died at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday March 31, 2009 in the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa. She was born April 14, 1917 in Dallas City, the daughter of Claude and Gracie Maude Hull Shaffner. On August 15, 1943, she married Ellsworth W. Riley in Dallas City. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2002.

Mrs. Riley was a lifelong resident of Dallas City. She had worked as a clerk in the Dallas City Post Office for thirty years. Earlier in life she had worked in the family grocery store and as a ticket taker at the former Dallas City Theater. She and her husband also owned many apartment buildings. She enjoyed volunteering at the Carthage Memorial Hospital for many years, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a former member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, and a member of the Dallas City First Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter - Clancy Marguerite Riley of Carthage, Illinois, one son - Kirk (Yiling) Riley of Dallas City, six grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter - Dena Kay Jacobs, one sister - Joanne Moyes, and one brother - Koll Shaffner.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday April 3, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday April 4th in the Dallas City Cemetery, with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Memorials have been established for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Boys and Girls Town USA .
