Mary Belle Sharpe

Mrs. Mary Belle Sharpe, 89, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Friday, February 20, 2009 at 4:50 A.M at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

She was born April 1, 1919 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Harry and Josie Byers Bradshaw. On October 28, 1938 she married Jack Sharpe in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2008.

She was a 1937 graduate of LaHarpe High School. She had served on the LaHarpe City Council, LaHarpe School Board and as an Election Judge.She was a member of the Thursday Club and the LaHarpe Christian Church. Prior to her marriage she worked at the Quill office in LaHarpe setting type. She and her husband were co-owners of Kay-Belle Pony farm in the 1950's and 60's having registered Shetland ponies and a grand champion they were so proud of. Later in life she and her husband enjoyed attending auctions. She loved animals, cooking, gardening and canning. She also operated the Sharpe Shop in LaHarpe.

She is survived by four children; Jodelle Hallowell of rural Dallas City, Illinois, Jacqueline (Gary) Eddington; Claudia (Charles) Apt; and Ted (Terri) Sharpe all of LaHarpe, eleven grandchildren; Scott Hallowell, Jamie Hallowell, Kelly (Jeff) Carroll, Ryan (Shanna) Eddington, Emily (Tyler) Dihle, Josie (John) Earle, Molly (Todd) Porter, Jason Apt, Melanie Sharpe, Jack Sharpe, and Tyler Sharpe, and 9 great-grandchildren. She and her husband also raised their nephew Dennis Sharpe for three years following his mother’s death in childbirth and while his father was serving in the army.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, William and Byers Bradshaw, son-in-law, Don Hallowell, nephew, Dennis Sharpe and her niece, Carolyn Cobb.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church.
