Milda Shay

Milda L. Shay, age 90 of Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:47 p.m. Monday January 5, 2009 in the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born February 4, 1918 in Vermont, Illinois, the daughter of Ralph W. and Lilly H. Lyebarger Higbee. On December 21, 1939 she was married to Kemper Williams. He preceded her in death in August of 1965. On November 6, 1966, she married Edward Shay. He preceded her in death on August 13, 2002.

She was a 1936 graduate of Industry High School and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. She had lived in the Quad Cities area during her first marriage, later moving to Lake Wildwood near Henry, Illinois, where she lived for 35 years. She moved to LaHarpe in 2002, and then to Burlington in 2005. She had worked as a buyer for Younkers and Montgomery Ward Department Stores, and later retired from Illinois Valley Savings and Loan in Henry. She had served as a Girl Scout Leader, Camp Director at Blackhawk Park, and was Secretary/Treasurer of Lake Wildwood Association.

Survivors include two sons - Fred (and Micki) Williams of Burlington, Iowa, Larry (and Connie) Williams of Timberling City, Missouri, two step children - Judy Shay of New Windsor, IL., Edward Shay of Metamora, IL., nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday January 7, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois. Interment will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday in the Greenview Memorial Cemetery in East Moline, Illinois. Memorials have been established for the LaHarpe Ambulance Service and LaHarpe Fire Department.
