Howard N. Newkirk

 

Mr. Howard N. Newkirk, 83, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 12:02 PM at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

He was born December 25, 1925 in Campbellsburg, Indiana, the son of John and Olive Smith. On July 15, 1961 he married Betty L. Needham in Monmouth, Illinois.

Mr. Newkirk, served in the US Navy during World War II. Early in life he worked as a funeral director with his brother in Indiana. Later he worked as an auto mechanic and was service manager for Thomas Motors in Fort Madison. From 1967 - 1973 he worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. He then taught auto mechanics for Southeastern Community College for 17 years. From 1990 - 2000 he was an educational speaker for Fel-Pro. He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club and it’s local chapters, the Big River Camping Club in Burlington and the Country Travelers in Washington, Iowa. At the age of 73, he earned his private pilots license.

He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Shirley (David) Kramer of Fort Madison and Cheryl (Darrell) Vaughn of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, 3 sons, Delbert (Ellen) Nelson, John F. (Allena) Newkirk and Fred (Tina) Newkirk all of Fort Madison, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, 1 niece and 1 nephew.

He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Frank Newkirk and his parents.

The family will meet with friends at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Saturday, January 3, 2008 from 6:00 until 7:30PM. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 PM Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Willis officiating. Military honors will be given by the Dallas City American Legion. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the PAWS Animal Shelter of Fort Madison or the Lee County Hospice.Send a condolence here.
