Ellen E. Kern

Ellen Elizabeth (Gittings) Kern, 95, LaHarpe, IL, (formerly of Three Rivers, MI and Burlington IA), died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at the LaHarpe Davier Health Care Center.

Ellen was born May 9, 1913 in Richmond, Arkansas, the daughter of Clyde & Clara (Vaughan) Gittings. On October 28, 1933 she married Harry Negley Kern in Chicago, IL.

All her life she enjoyed piecing and quilting quilts. She was a 1931 graduate of the Dallas City, Illinois High School. She and her husband owned and operated Kern Grocery in Three Rivers, Michigan from 1949 - 1957.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Monte James (Verlynne) Kern of Three Rivers, MI & Marvin Jack (Patricia) Kern of Lake Wales, Florida. Six Grandchildren: Luellen (Daniel) Carr, Monte Jr. (Chris) Kern, Lynn (Rob) Payne, Michele Kern, Richard (Kelly) Kern, and Miranda (Scott) Egleston. 13 Great Grandchildren, Stephanie, Rebekah, Hannah and Elijah Carr, Tyler and Morgan Kern, Douglas Bennett, Austyn and Henrik Payne, Ryan Kern, Markell Zinkovitch, Richard Kern and Nicolas Kern, 2 sisters, Helen Breazeale of Lebanon, NJ and Roxie Evans of Lomax, IL, 1 sister-in-law, Verda Mae Gittings, Dallas City, IL, 2 brothers-in-law, Glen Kern of Clarksville, AR and Gale (Carol) Kern of LaHarpe, IL. Several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, Great Granddaughter, Mateja Alise Payne, Daughter-in-law, Cynthia Kern Keyser, parents, 1 sister, Emma Jean Siegworth, 5 brothers, Dewey, Chalmer, Samuel, Roy, and Clyde Gittings.

Services will be held at11:00 A.M. Monday, December 1, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Wynona Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Carman Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation but family and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, November 30, 2008 between 2:00 and 8:00 P.M.
