Clyde R. Gittings

Clyde Roosevelt Gittings, age 91 of rural Dallas City, Illinois died at 9:58 P.M. Tuesday September 30, 2008 at his home. He was born May 17, 1917 near Lomax, Illinois, the son of Clyde and Clara Vaughn Gittings. On September 30, 1939, he married Verda Mae Scott in Monticello, Missouri.
Mr. Gittings attended schools in Terre Haute, Illinois. After school, he played baseball for the Lomax Bees. He was a supervisor at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown for thirty eight years. He also was a meter reader for WIEC for twenty three years. He was president and manager of the Lomax-Carman Senior Citizens, and was a member of the Lomax Saddle Club. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in all sports, including basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, and softball. He also farmed all of his life, raising horses, cattle and kids.
Survivors include his wife, six daughters- Rosilee (and Gerald) Postle of Carman, IL., Lila Gittings and Sandra Hewitt both of Dallas City, Ellen (and Randy) May of Lomax, IL., Nancy (and Carey) McDonald of Littleton, CO., Peggy (and Randy) Nelson of Mount Union, IA., three sons - Lyle Gittings of Dallas City, Ronnie (and Shelly) Gittings of Stronghurst, IL., Rodney (and Drena) Gittings of Rock Island, IL., twenty seven grandchildren, sixty one great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and three sisters - Ellen Kern of LaHarpe, IL., Helen Breazeale of New Jersey, and Roxie Evans of Lomax, IL. He was preceded in death by one son - Randy Gittings, one grandson - Gary Gittings, one great grandson - Noah Stone, four brothers - Dewey, Chalmer, Vaughn, and Roy Gittings and by one sister - Emma Jean.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday October 4, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois with Rev. Peggy Stott and Rev. Kendall Hetrick, and Harold Correll officiating. Burial will be in the Crane Cemetery, near Lomax. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax-Carman Senior Citizens. Send a condolence here.
