Ernie Gilpin

Mr. Ernie Gilpin, 63, of Dallas City, Illinois died Monday, July 7, 2008 at 11:15 A.M. at his home after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He was born May 23, 1945 in Pontoosuc, Illinois, the son of George and Nina Hawkins Gilpin. On May 16, 1971 he married Sherrill Andrew in Dallas City.
Mr. Gilpin was a commercial fisherman and for the past 12 years he and his wife cared for the elderly in their home and an adjacent home they called the Gilpin Home. He loved astronomy and looking at the stars with his telescope. He also enjoyed collecting rocks, solving crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Eric Gilpin of Dallas City, one daughter, Jill Gilpin of Dallas City, four grandchildren, Gabrielle, Trevin, Alaina and Joni, six sisters, Bernice Mitchell of Keokuk, IA, Christel Sherwood of Dallas City, Patricia Silk of Fort Madison, Nancy Pence of Dallas City, Joan Dutton of Burlington, IA and Jane Aegator of Cedar Rapids, IA, two brothers, Nolan Gilpin of Niota, IL and Larry Gilpin of Dallas City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
His body has been cremated and per his request no services are planned. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon and a celebration of Ernie’s life at the Senior Citizens Center in Dallas City on July 13, 2008 from 11:00 until 3:00. A memorial fund has been established for the Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.
