Roy Gene "Booker" Carnes

Roy Gene “Booker” Carnes, age 82 of the river community of Shokokon inCarman, Illinois died at 4:00 A.M. Sunday March 9, 2008 at Great River Hospice in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born September 30, 1925 in Kirkwood, Illinois, the son of Jim and Leona Litrell Carnes. On July 9, 1944, he married Peggy Burrell in Kahoka, Missouri.

Roy began working at a very early age on a farm near Media, Illinois. He later worked for the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant, J.I. Case Company, and as a trucker and custom applicator for about twenty years before retiring in the mid 1980's.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Peggy, visiting variousstates and Mexico. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Eagles Club.

Roy loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed working with Clydesdale Horses, playing cards, and boating.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy of Carman, one daughter - Gloria of Burlington, Iowa, four grandchildren - Mike (Pam) Day Jr. of Media, IL., Mark (Tamara) Day of Carman, IL., Roy (Carla) Day of Blandinsville, IL., and Tammy of Burlington, IA., seven great grandchildren - Phillip Smith, Curtis Smith, Robert Day, Ashley Day, Lacey Day, Kaley Day, and “Ro” Day, two sisters - Betty Carmean of Stronghurst, Isabelle Johnson of Stronghurst, and one brother - Don Carnes of Media. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, five sisters, and one great grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday March 12, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established.
