Marjory H. Barber
Marjory H. Barber, age 84 of Media, Illinois died at 10:10 A.M. Tuesday November 6, 2007 in the Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. She was born July 24, 1923 at her grandfather’s home in Media, Illinois, the daughter of Frank Harold and Eurie Mathers Graham. On August 13, 1943, she married Staff Sergeant Clifford R. Barber in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan., where Clifford’s unit was guarding the International Falls Locks, during World War II. He preceded her in death on April 21, 2005.
She attended 2 years of schooling in Chicago, Illinois, (first grade and her freshman year of high school at Sern High School). The rest of her schooling was received in Media, graduating from Media High School in 1940. She had worked part time at Foehlinger Photo Studio in Burlington, Iowa, prior to her marriage. She was a lifetime member of the Media United Presbyterian Church and had served several years as an elder. She was a well known professional artist in this area, earning many awards at art shows. She taught adult education classes in oil painting over an eleven year period for Carl Sandburg College of Galesburg, Illinois.
Survivors include one son – David (and Andrea) Barber of Raritan, IL., two daughters – Linda (and Larry) Gearhart, of Media, IL., Susan (and James) Hart of Kirkwood, IL., one step daughter – Dixie Dewitt of Roseville, IL., six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister – Dorothy Chewning of Corpus Christi, TX., one niece – Donna Mueller of Corpus Christi, and two nephews – Steve Chewning of Houston, TX., and Jack Barber of West Point, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 61 years, Clifford.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday November 10, 2007 in the Media United Presbyterian Church with Pam Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery near Media. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday.
