E. A. "Babe" Serangeli

Mr. E. A. “Babe” Serangeli, 85, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 12:42 P.M. at his home.

He was born November 4, 1921 in Pekin, Illinois, the son of Ettore and Norma Bonjean Serangeli. On May 1, 1947 he married Ann Flynn in Dallas City. She preceded him in death on October 20, 1981. On December 3, 1983 he married Shirley Easley Buckley in Dallas City. She survives.

Mr. Serangeli was a graduate of Pekin Community High School and of the University of Illinois. He was a Veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He attended OCS at Fort Sill, OK, served in the Philippines with the 503 RCT (Airborne) and in Japan with the 11th Airborne Division. He later served in Korea with the Korean Military Advisory Group. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and was also the recipient of both the Philippine and Korean President Unit Citation. He retired from military service, as a Captain, in September 1953. He then worked for W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison for many years, retiring as Credit Manager, on January 31, 1986.

He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years, a lifetime member of the VFW , the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Kentucky Colonel

In 1938 he was selected to represent the American Legion Post 44 of Pekin at Boys State. He served as Secretary/Treasure of the Hancock County Housing Authority, served on the Dallas City Park Board, was president of the Dallas City Grade School Board and served as president of the initial Unit District 336 School Board. He also was a director and past president of the Bank of Dallas City. He worked for many years with Hancock County Judge, John Gorby, as parole officer. He was President of E and E Specialty Co. and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, three children, twins, Deborah Sue (Vance) Tyler of Roswell, Georgia, and William B. (Karen) Serangeli of Des Moines, Iowa and Bradley L. (Joyce) Serangeli of St. Peters, Missouri, four step-children, Rhonda (Larry) Zumdome, Bradley (Lynn) Buckley, Penny Schneider all of Fort Madison, Iowa and Lynn (Wade) Reeder of Hannibal, Missouri, 17 grandchildren, B.J., Elizabeth and Marie Serangeli, Erik Zumdome, Heather (Randy) Stuecker, Mitch and Allison Reeder, Kelly and Abby Schneider, Anthony, Ben and Katie Serangeli, Lockland and Sean Tyler, Luke (Megan) Struve, Lindsay Struve and Heidi (Bob) Rozmiarek and 5 great-grandchildren, Noah and Caitlin Serangeli, Ella Struve, and Dylan and Riley Stuecker.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, one daughter in infancy , Cathy Jo, one sister, Josephine Massa and his parents.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 13, 2007 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley and Monsignor Paul Showalter as Celebrants. Burial will be in the Gittings Mound Cemetery near Dallas City. Military Rites will be given by the Dallas City American Legion Post. A Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends until 4:00 P.M.
