Arthur LeRoy "Roy" Painter

Mr. Arthur LeRoy “Roy” Painter, 93, of Terre Haute, Illinois died Monday, June 4, 2007 at 9:45 P.M. at the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.

He was born August 25, 1913 at the family farm near Terre Haute, the son of Charles Carroll and Mary Birdine (Bryan) Painter. On August 27, 1939 he married Bernice Faye Howell in Richmond, Indiana. Mrs. Painter and three of their children were killed in a car accident in 1955. In 1962 he married Francis Brandt Hunter. She died February 17, 1992.

Mr. Painter was a lifelong farmer, spending his entire life in the Terre Haute community where he lived on his farm that has been in the family since 1849. He graduated valedictorian from Terre Haute High School in 1931. He was a lifetime member of the Terre Haute United Methodist Church where he served at many different leadership positions over the years. He was a founder and original fireman for the Terre Haute Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 40 years. He helped start the Henderson County Conservation Department and served as an original board member. He also served on the local school board for many years and was Terre Haute Township Clerk for 24 years. He enjoyed woodworking in his retirement years, making clocks and items for family and friends. He also made many science project demonstrations and was awarded the first “Friend of Science” award from the Iowa Academy of Science for his work. He loved music and singing and attending his grandchildren’s music programs.

He is survived by his son, Stephen (Diane) Painter of Terre Haute, his daughter, Susan (Kent) Vogel of Solon, Iowa, four grandchildren, Stephen (Tracy) Anderson of Wilson, North Carolina and Shannen Painter and Shayla (Nicholas) Troutman and Shane Painter all of Terre Haute, three step-grandchildren, Jackie (David) Demler of Macomb, Illinois, Jennifer (Ryan) Larmore of Traer, Iowa and Joshua Vogel of Waterloo, Iowa and four step-great-grandchildren, Faith and Ella Demler and Allyson and Kylee Larmore and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by three children, Charles Carroll Painter, Mary Anne Painter and John Arthur Painter, three brothers, three sisters, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Terre Haute United Methodist Church with Rev. Diane Bigley officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute Cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M., Thursday.
